"If men weren't so simple, women wouldn't have to be so complicated." Jane Seabrook's philosophical penguin is only one of the animal pundits who populate this book. The New Zealand artist's tender watercolors place each of these wise animals in the best possible light. Witty menagerie aphorisms.

Library Journal
In today's chaotic world, the common experience of sharing the evening meal can restore a sense of community and humanity to society. More important, the blessing of the meal fosters in us a sense of gratitude for the gifts we have been given. This collection of 365 "blessings"-ranging from the words of Augustine and Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh to the Beatles' now famous "In the end the love you take/ is equal to the love you make"-celebrates the connections between grace and gratitude. To aid readers in selecting a grace appropriate to the occasion, there is a topical index as well as divisions marked by seasons of the year. The book will have wide appeal because it traverses all spiritual traditions. For general collections.
by M. J. Ryan, Hardcover
MJ Ryan has taught us that everything goes better with gratitude! In 1999, she wrote Attitudes of Gratitude, a popular, bestselling book that extols the benefits of living with a grateful heart. When we let ourselves feel and express our appreciation, we feel happier, younger, and healthier. Now Ryan has taken the essence of living a grateful life from the original book and paired it with beautiful and evocative images in Giving Thanks.
From the Book:
Gratitude connects us to others and feeling gratitude allows us to be our best selves -- in good times and in hard times. When we are truly grateful, we can count on living the life we want. With the "gratitude movement" sweeping the country -- from left to right, from conservative to progressive, from mainstream to alternative -- people are looking for ways to express their gratitude. This impeccable book is a colorful map of the geography of gratitude, and it offers a wonderful opportunity for readers to learn a variety of ways to be grateful. It is also a beautiful "thank you" gift in itself.
by M. J. Ryan, Paperback
"We can have happier and more joy-filled relationships if we focus on what's right about them rather than what's wrong," writes M.J. Ryan in Attitudes of Gratitude in Love, the follow-up to her bestselling Attitudes of Gratitude. In her characteristically down-to-earth style, Ryan shows you how to use the experience of gratitude to get back in touch with why you fell in love in the first place and how to deepen the love between you and your partner, no matter how long you've been together.
Publishers Weekly
Conari Press cofounder M.J. Ryan admits that while it's easy to be grateful for sun, rain and good food, it's much harder to practice gratitude in intimate relationships. But adding gratefulness to a relationship can help remind people why they fell in love in the first place, fuel happiness and even deepen love. In Attitudes of Gratitude in Love: Creating More Joy in Your Relationship, Ryan (Attitudes of Gratitude) presents a multitude of brief essays on not taking love for granted, ditching feelings of resentment, the benefits of relationship gratitude and giving in order to receive. The book's boxy shape and colorful cover make it an appropriate gift. (Aug.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Sudoku fans will welcome this bright new twist to the popular puzzles! Every one of these ingenious creations—from “Bold X” to “Rainbow Up”—makes colors and patterns part of the solving fun. And although each puzzle maintains the normal 9x9 grid and follows the basic rules of the game, every style adds an additional restriction to intensify the challenge. In “Worms,” for example, swirly, squirmy shapes fill the grids; the numbers increase as you work your way from head to tail. “Even/Odd” features squares in two colors, depending on whether the number to fill it is even or odd. And in “Positional Board,” no two of the red squares can be the same number. They’re all lots of fun!

by Kathleen V. Hurley, Paperback, 1st ed
The authors of the popular What's My Type? break through to a dramatic new level of Enneagram work by exploring the Original -- or Hidden -- Wound and outlining the recovery of our Repressed Center -- the key to releasing our power to love ourselves, love others, and put our unique talents to work in the world. Reclaiming the Hidden Self or Repressed Center completes, heals, and integrates our personality. Through real-life examples and questions for personal or group use, the authors detail this soul-making process by which we become rounded, capable of love, and empowered to create and contribute.
Hurley and Dobson explor the three centers of human intelligence -- the Intellectual, the Relational, and the Creative -- and how they operate in our lives. Each of the nine personality types prefers one center, relies on another for backup support, and represses one center altogether. The Enneagram challenge is to recover the lost resources of our personality's repressed center. Freed to be fully intellectual, creative, and relational in our living, we become able to achieve harmony, joy, love, and creativity.
Library Journal
The authors, psychologists and Enneagram workshop leaders, present basic Enneagram background quickly and then go on to focus on new material: the idea that each Enneagram type has a ``repressed center'' caused by an ``original wound'' and that types three, six, and nine have two subtypes with different repressed centers. Hurley and Dobson believe that soul-making has been neglected; hence, exercises, for group or individual use, are included to foster the soul-making process and help individuals become loving and creative persons. Recommended for libraries with any Enneagram materials.

by Don Richard Riso, Paperback, REVISED
" The Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for understanding more about ourselves. No matter from which point of view we approach it, we discover fresh conjunctions of new and old ideas." So writes Don Riso in this expanded edition of his classic interpretation of the Enneagram, the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. In addition to updating the descriptions of the nine personality types, Personality Types, Revised greatly expands the accompanying guidelines and, for the first time, uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published. This increased specificity will allow therapists, social workers, personnel managers, students of the Enneagram, and general readers alike to use it with much greater precision as they unlock the secrets of self-understanding, and thus self-transformation.
Publishers Weekly
A geometric figure made of nine intersecting lines, the enneagram is thought by some to represent nine basic personality types. These types, as defined here, are the Reformer, Helper (Bill Cosby, Gandhi), Status Seeker (Gary Hart), Artist, Thinker, Loyalist (Joseph McCarthy, Johnny Carson), Generalist, Leader and Peacemaker. If you're a type seven with an eight wing (like Joan Collins), then you're very aggressive and have a strong ego to back your demands. The trouble with this system is that, unlike astrology or numerology, it is speculative which personality type best fits an individual. Once you've established that, you then have to decide if the person in question is Healthy, Average or Unhealthy. Oscar Ichazo, founder of the Arica Institute, reportedly learned about the enneagram from Sufis in Afghanistan. The investigation here broadens Ichazo's framework but still leaves plenty of room for guesswork. Riso is a New Yorkbased enneagram consultant. (September 14)
