Why Do I Keep Doing That? Why Do I Keep Doing That?
by Dennis Wholey, Hardcover

Why We Do What We Don’t Want to Do--and How to Stop

Why Do I Keep Doing That? Why Do I Keep Doing That? explains why we all experience the “compulsion to repeat” and discover the most successful ways to stop doing what we don’t want to do . . . whether we drink it, smoke it, snort it, pop it, spend it, gamble it, eat it, work it, feel it, or have sex or a relationship with it.
As a recovering alcoholic, Dennis Wholey knows firsthand what it takes to break an addiction. In his New York Times bestseller The Courage to Change, Wholey brilliantly changed the way people viewed the negative pattern of substance addiction. Now, in this highly anticipated book, Why Do I Keep Doing That? Why Do I Keep Doing That?, Wholey expands the exploration of the compulsion to repeat by tackling other negative and self-defeating patterns of various types and degrees.

Habits are hard to break--especially destructive ones that bring about pain in our lives, create continuous problems or obstacles, keep us with people who are bad for us, and prevent us from reaching our full potential.

We all have our own answer and our own path to healing. Dennis Wholey helps you find yours. He shows us how to make these changes with expert insights from his team of behavioral experts along with personal stories of different negative behaviors and lifestyles, questionnaires, evaluations, and “personal inventories” that dig into your own life and background. Why Do I Keep Doing That? Why Do I Keep Doing That? shows you how to find the answers you seek, the support you deserve, and theunderstanding you must have to forge your way to a happier, more rewarding life--and a truer sense of who you are.

Publishers Weekly

Frustrated by his own self-defeating behavior and inspired by Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle, talk show host Wholey (PBS's This Is America) explains repetition compulsion—a tendency to repeat behavior that has already proved unhealthy—using interviews with mental health experts and the testimony of ordinary people who have conquered their problems. Dealing with pitfalls such as people pleasing, procrastination and rage, these regular people explain their specific problems, theorize about what drives their "compulsion to repeat" and offer their commonsense suggestions for change. The experts—including Peter Kramer (Listening to Prozac), Nathaniel Branden (Six Pillars of Self-Esteem), Harvard clinical psychiatry professor E. Virginia Demos and others—reinforce Freud's belief that such behavior is rooted in childhood experience. Wholey (The Miracle of Change) himself sticks to pep talks and questionnaires designed to illuminate the reader's problems. This encouraging guide offers the fundamental advice that one should seek professional help. Though readers stuck in negative patterns may recognize themselves in Wholey's case studies, those who have already graced a therapist's couch won't find any new insight here. (Mar.)

Will the REAL You Please Stand Up?
by Fran Harris, Hardcover

An authentic, joyful life can be hard to find. Fortunately, Fran Harris has written the map—in 7 steps anyone can take.

Successful, self-actualized and blissful: how many of us can say that about ourselves?

Fran Harris sure can. She's a national television personality, WNBA Champion, international inspirational speaker, life coach and consultant to Fortune 500 companies. But ask her about her greatest accomplishment, and she's likely to smile and say, "That's easy: I found the REAL me. "

Because she believes we should all experience that journey, Fran's new book reveals her secrets for scrapping what we think we know about authenticity so that we can see and live up to our own potential. Her "7 Steps" are unconventional—and maybe controversial—but they work.

Dr. Harris teaches that we'll only find our real selves by shedding all the layers of institutionalized belief, dogma and practice that we pile on in life—eschewing ritualized adherence in favor of a deeper, more spiritual view of the world and ourselves. This, she contends, is what "God" wants for us. According to Harris, when we become unburdened by society's expectations, we are free to experience true joy, more capable of tapping into our own genius, and more likely to attract abundance and prosperity in all areas of our lives.

A life of passion and purpose is everyone's birthright. Get yours!

Each chapter focuses on one ingredient in the recipe for success. The elements are identified as effective concentration, a joyful love for one's work, unrelenting practice of one's skills, persistent determination to achieve, acceptance of personal responsibility for one's own actions, treating others with warmth and respect, etc. There are copious anecdotes about how the basketball star has smoothly blended them all into his life, but there are also quotes from a variety of people, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Smren Kierkegaard, James Baldwin, Miles Davis, and Anthony Quinn. Hope and Healing for Children
Hurt by Addiction in the Family

Before the Glory
by Billy Staples, Paperback

More than any other sport, baseball has been identified with America—its values, dreams, lessons, and losses. Most of all, baseball is connected to the American childhood. In Before the Glory, the game’s living legends, maverick players, and stars of today tell the stories of their childhood and coming of age with the innocence and candor of youth. From Bill Mazeroski growing up in a shack without heating or electricity, to Ron LeFlore becoming addicted to drugs at the age of twelve, to David Wright winning a food-fight in the school cafeteria, Before the Glory is not simply baseball, it is life. It is poverty, segregation, innovation, integration, survival, war, peace, love, hate, villains, and heroes—all as seen through the eyes of everyday children who happened to have the desire and ability to rise to the top of America’s greatest sport. Hall of Famers, retired MLB players, and current stars, including David Wright, Justin Morneau, and Brian Roberts agreed to be interviewed especially for this book and share, in their own words, their perspectives on the challenges of childhood, family life, and reaching goals. This book is an inspiration to young and older fans alike. Foreword by Brooks Robinson. Includes an 8-page color insert.

KLIATT

These days teachers are more likely to complain that books aimed at teens place glitz over substance, but this book could be a case where the complaint is reversed. The substance here is substantive and positive. The presentation is a bit blah. Text runs on, black page after black page, broken only by subheads. A color insert helps, as does a cover of sports snapshots, but hardly makes each separate baseball story more initially inviting. The premise is promising. Let readers learn more about baseball heroes, past and present, by reading about the challenges they've overcome and how they turned adversity to their advantage. The approach is interesting. Let ballplayers tell their childhood stories themselves, then have the stories of their later successes told third person by the authors (Before the Glory and The Glory). Segments vary in length, from two to ten pages or so, and there are frequent subheads to divide material into easier-to-access sizes. However, the first-person stories ramble a bit. It's nice that the big moral challenge/accomplishment angles aren't over hyped. But the format also lets focus diffuse a bit too much. The authors include players from the '40s to today—black, white, Hispanic—and the stories really are different and feel authentic. However, only three players are active now, so teen readers would probably need to be real fans of the game to dive into this book.

    Living Jonathan’s Life
    by Scott M. Davis, Paperback

A true story of identical twin brothers, each fighting similar physical and emotional battles. One would lose his life; the other would nearly self-destruct.
The day I watched my identical twin brother die before my eyes, I experienced a loss that was devastating and without comparison. With his passing, I lost much more than a best friend, a confidante, and a brother; I lost a human mirror, a reflection into which I had always been able to look and from which I could gain strength. When Jonathan died, that once-radiant mirror turned black as stone. I could no longer see myself as I did before, let alone see myself living without him. His disease had claimed me, too.
Wracked with guilt that he, an aspiring medical student, couldn't save his brother and plagued with nagging questions about the twin he thought he knew, Scott Davis, M. D. , turned to what he knew could cure all: a pill. And then another, and another, until even they couldn't numb the pain--the same kind of pains in the same places that his brother, Jonathan, experienced as he was dying. The phantom pains baffled medical experts, who tried surgery and morphine to no avail. When Dr. Davis began writing prescriptions for himself, it was only a matter of time before he was discovered and his world came crashing down. Ironically, it was his brother's words--in a stack of hidden poems stashed away--that showed Scott the way back to the life he knew and the brother he hadn't.
Living Jonathan's Life is a riveting, heartfelt tapestry of brotherly love and bonds, of family ties and self-renewal, that will strike a chord with anyone who has loved and lost.

A Taste-Berry Teen's Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life is sure to be the next big success in this extraordinary teen series.

    VOYA

This fifth book in the Taste-Berry series, a Chicken Soup look-alike, is a mixed bag. It provides clear guidelines on the nature of stress, what causes it, how to identify it, and how to cope with it. It advises wisely, "While you can't always control or change the event, how you respond is under your control." The format, however, is confusing. Seventeen appealing teen-written personal-experience essays appear up front, followed by chapters of various lengths containing didactic instructional material, miscellaneous worksheets, and teen essays sandwiched in. Unless a reader has a compelling interest in stress, he or she is apt to skip the instruction, pick out the few essays, and close the book. The chapters are organized into seven parts covering stress particular to teens, understanding the many personalities of stress, coping skills, and more. There is an epilogue, a list of suggested resources including hot line numbers, and a reading list, but no Web sites. The authors urge clean living, drug avoidance, and positive thinking to manage stress: "Make a decision to see life from the cup half-full point of view." Despite the liberal use of terms chosen for teen identification—teenville, joggin' your noggin, and the land of Overwhelm—the book, although not blatantly preachy, is teachy. Liberally funded libraries where mental self-help or Taste-Berry books are popular might find this guide a worthwhile purchase. Further Reading. The Hoop and the Tree
    by Chris Hoffman, Paperback

The tree is the vertical dimension of aspiration and ascent, of individual growth, intellectual and spiritual development (the Zuni people's ladder to a better world; the Kabbalah's tree of life). The Hoop is the circular representation of our relationship with all others and with the earth (Native American medicine wheels and sweat lodges, which honor all relationships; the yin-yang).

Those who focus primarily on the Tree of personal development often neglect their crucial relationship to the concentric circle of family, friends, all humanity and our earth. Those who concentrate above all on the Hoop of caring and relationship may be overlooking their own development and professional success. The Hoop and the Tree shows readers how to develop and balance both parts of the whole to lead a happier, more contented, complete existence.

Full of story and example, exercises and questions, Chris Hoffman presents the potent structure of Hoop and Tree in a clear, accessible style, helping the reader apply these concepts in a very practical, relevant way.

    Internet Book Watch

The Hoop & The Tree: A Compass For Finding A Deeper Relationship With All Life is a ground breaking treatise offer the reader a practical integration of psychology, spirituality, and ecology. Chris Hoffman draws from world mythology and scared traditions that include elements of Native American teachings, Taoism, Kabbalism, Sufism, Druidism, Buddhism, and contemporary psychology. Highly recommended reading for students of metaphysics, spirituality, psychology, and personal growth, The Hoop And The Tree makes clear that there is a direct relationship between human psychology and environmental ecology, and that the mature self is necessarily ecological in nature.

    Persephone Returns
by Tanya Wilkinson, Paperback, 1 ED

Using myth and fairy tales, Dr. Tanya Wilkinson adds insightful commentary on the individual dynamics and cultural patterns which contribute to the deep schism between "victims" and "heroes" in our society. In modern life we sympathize only with the blameless victim, and cling to the image of a "heroic ideal" - that is, if we are only good enough or strong enough, bad things will not happen to us. But bad things do happen to good and strong people, as well as to people who are not entirely blameless. Dr. Wilkinson moves beyond the debate of "who's at fault." Using the Persephone myth and four fairy tales, the author instead illustrates the deep archetypal forces at work in victim experiences and encourages us to search for the emotional and spiritual maturity which may be gained from them.

    Library Journal

A psychotherapist and professor, Wilkinson (psychology, California Inst. of Integral Studies) compares her clients' struggles to mythic and fairytale accounts in the vein of many Jungians before her. Concentrating on case studies involving victimization, she includes the Persephone/Demeter story, Beauty and the Beast, and three tales from The Brothers Grimm, all of which lend themselves to an archetypal analysis of the hero/victim dichotomy. Throughout, she stresses the value of exercising liminality-the ability to employ and appreciate emotions, bodily sensations, dreams, and fantasies. Wilkinson makes numerous excellent points, e.g., that the fairy tale "mediates between the otherness of mythic images and everyday life." Although hampered by mundane passages on client histories that pale next to the sparklingly crisp mythic images, this book is recommended for therapists and informed readers alike.-Terry McMaster, Onondaga Cty.
