Most books on trauma in children address therapists or medical professionals, emphasizing drug treatments and leaving parents out in the cold. This book, aimed not only at biological, foster, and adoptive parents but also other adult relatives and daycare workers, shows how to nip trauma in the bud by offering preventative “emotional first aid” at the earliest signs. Using vivid case-study examples, Trauma-Proofing Your Child explains how trauma can result not only from catastrophic events but also from more prosaic occurrences such as sports injury and separation. The authors offer step-by-step guidance on preventing long-term symptoms like anxiety and depression. These measures are taught in simple language and as experiential “stress-busting” exercises that can be practiced. Helping children deal with life’s mishaps when they occur encourages a resilience that can serve as a sort of stress “inoculation” throughout their lives. The book also addresses the core issue of trauma’s effect on the body and what it takes to return the nervous system to equilibrium and balance. Trauma-Proofing Your Child simplifies a complex subject to let those in the first line of defense foster hardy, compassionate, self-reliant children.

With a per capita publishing rate of more that three times that of the United States, Slovenia has a long and storied literary history, from the legendary 9th-century Freising Manuscripts to postmodern masterpieces by Igor Bratoz. Continuing that tradition, Angels Beneath the Surface, the first collection of Slovene fiction to be published in English outside of Slovenia since 1994, offers a rich sampling of Slovene short stories. The thirteen tales here represent a wide array of voices and writing styles among the country's renowned–and emergent–writers.
Written between 1990 and 2005, the selections in Angels Beneath the Surface together comprise a vivid snapshot of Slovene literary consciousness at the turn of the millennium. These authors mine their culture for often startling insights in stories that range from wicked variations on fairy tales to dour romances to skewerings of the bureaucratic state.
Recent articles in The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, and other prominent publications attest to renewed interest in European literature in translation, and this collection is an incisive entry in the genre.

This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most beloved and important religious figures in history.
During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time.
Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood and director of the Mother Teresa Center, Mother Teresa brings together letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul.
Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her death, Mother Teresa is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life and work continue to be admired by millions of people.
Biography
Born in Skopje in 1910, MOTHER TERESA joined the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin in 1928 and was sent to India, where she began her novitiate. She taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta from 1931 to 1948, until leaving the Loreto order to begin the Missionaries of Charity. Through her sisters, brothers, and priests, her service of the poorest of the poor spread all around the world. She won many awards, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. After her death in 1997, the process for her sainthood was quickly begun and she was beatified in 2003.

by Georgette Delvaux, Paperback
Written in an approachable, conversational tone, A Barefoot Doctor's Guide for Women focuses on women's hormonal health. Author Georgette Delvaux describes issues such as menstruation, pre-menopause, and menopause, explaining how they can begin as mere annoyances and gradually develop into major problems that affect both body and mind. She discusses accompanying problems that can be directly related to hormonal issues or that simply occur at the same time-fluid retention, inflammation, indigestion, anxiety, and insomnia-and details how osteoporosis can be treated with good nutrition and weight-bearing activity. A central theme of the book concerns the harmful effects of the popular practice of eliminating hormonal imbalances using artificial or natural hormone supplements. Delvaux encourages women to trust subtle changes in their own sensations that may indicate imbalance, showing that small imbalances are often easy to treat using reputable alternative practitioners. In addition, she explains how to prevent the development of more serious problems that may require treatments with dangerous side effects. The book discusses how contemporary Western medical approaches are complemented by alternative methods such as homeopathy and naturopathy, as well as age-old Eastern medical practices like acupuncture and Ayurveda.

by Mayank Chhaya, Hardcover
Written with the full cooperation of the Dalai Lama, this fascinating, up-to-date biography at once captures the public persona and enduring mystery behind one of the world’s most important spiritual leaders.
In 1997, the Indian journalist Mayank Chhaya was authorized by the Dalai Lama to write about his life and times. The only authorized biographer who is not a Buddhist, Chhaya conducted more than a dozen personal interviews with the Dalai Lama in McLeod Ganj in India’s Himalayan north, home to Tibet’s government-in-exile. In Dalai Lama: Man, Monk, Mystic he presents an in-depth, insightful portrait of a figure of perennial interest to people all over the world.
Chhaya writes about Tibet and the Buddhist tradition from which the Dalai Lama emerged, helping readers understand the context that shaped his beliefs, politics, and ideals. Adding depth and nuance to his portrait, Chhaya depicts the Dalai Lama in the light of his life in exile and the various roles he has had to assume for his followers. He sheds light on the highly complex conflict between China and Tibet, and offers insights into the growing discontent among young Tibetans who are frustrated with the nonviolent approach to Chinese occupation that the Dalai Lama advocates.
A balanced, informative view of the Dalai Lama and his work, this biography is both a compelling profile of a remarkable spiritual leader and his mission, and an engaging look at how the current unrest in his country will affect its future.
Publishers Weekly
This is an authorized biography by an Indian journalist who did his research homework and had access to the Dalai Lama. The author also brings a familiarity with Asian politics, an essential frame of reference for understanding the complex situation of the Tibetan spiritual and political leader who has spent close to 50 years in exile in India. The end product is balanced-neither debunking nor hagiographic, but taking a Buddhist-style Middle Way toward its subject, even though the author is not himself a Buddhist. Particularly fascinating and demystifying is the account of the Dalai Lama's earliest years. Llamo Thondup, the Dalai Lama's birth name, was identified as the reincarnation of Tibet's top leader when he was just three years old. Scene-setting detail makes this chapter of the leader's life especially well told. By contrast, the end of the book feels a bit padded with speculation about the future of Tibet. This geopolitical assessment backgrounds the person of the Dalai Lama, a letdown in a biography. Less political analysis and more portraiture would have made a more successful and revealing life story. But this book provides valuable information about a man whose human character is not nearly as well known as his exotic spiritual image. (Mar. 13) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Hardcover
A reimagining of the world-famous Indian epic, the Mahabharat—told from the point of view of the wife of an amazing woman.
Relevant to today’s war-torn world, The Palace of Illusions takes us back to a time that is half history, half myth, and wholly magical. Narrated by Panchaali, the wife of the legendary Pandavas brothers in the Mahabharat, the novel gives us a new interpretation of this ancient tale.
The novel traces the princess Panchaali's life, beginning with her birth in fire and following her spirited balancing act as a woman with five husbands who have been cheated out of their father’s kingdom. Panchaali is swept into their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war involving all the important kings of India. Meanwhile, we never lose sight of her strategic duels with her mother-in-law, her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna, or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husbands' most dangerous enemy. Panchaali is a fiery female redefining for us a world of warriors, gods, and the ever-manipulating hands of fate.
Publishers Weekly
Recasting the Indian epic Mahabharatafrom the perspective of Princess Panchaali, veteran novelist Divakaruni (Queen of Dream) offers a vivid and inventive companion to the renowned poem. Born from fire and marked with the prophecy that she will change the course of history, the strong-willed Panchaali declares early on that she won't spend her life merely supporting the men around her. Soon enough, she bucks tradition by simultaneously wedding all five famous Pandava brothers, who have been denied their rightful kingdom, and finds herself the happy mistress of the much-envied palace of illusions. Panchaali's joy is short-lived, however, when hubris, fate and the desire for vengeance in reclaiming the Pandavas' kingdom (all also prophesied) cause her and her husbands to make mistakes that have cascading political effects, shattering peace in the region. Devastation ensues, but spiritual remarks from the divine Krishna put life and death in a cosmic context. Despite an intrusive retrospective voice ("I didn't know then how sorely...love would be tested") and a sometimes heavy-handed feminism, Divakaruni's rich, action-filled narrative contrasts well with the complex psychological portrait of a mythic princess. by Gabriel Cousens, Paperback
Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens’s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100% organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread “culture of death”–symbolized by addictive junk food–that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life.

“It was not always easy to be the guru’s wife,” writes Diana Mukpo. “But I must say, it was rarely boring.” At the age of sixteen, Diana Mukpo left school and broke with her upper-class English family to marry Chögyam Trungpa, a young Tibetan lama who would go on to become a major figure in the transmission of Buddhism to the West. In a memoir that is at turns magical, troubling, humorous, and totally out of the ordinary, Diana takes us into her intimate life with one of the most influential and dynamic Buddhist teachers of our time.
Diana led an extraordinary and unusual life as the "first lady" of a burgeoning Buddhist community in the American 1970s and '80s. She gave birth to four sons, three of whom were recognized as reincarnations of high Tibetan lamas. It is not a simple matter to be a modern Western woman married to a Tibetan Buddhist master, let alone to a public figure who is sought out and adored by thousands of eager students. Surprising events and colorful people fill the narrative as Diana seeks to understand the dynamic, puzzling, and larger-than-life man she married—and to find a place for herself in his unusual world.
Rich in ambiguity, Dragon Thunder is the story of an uncommon marriage and also a stirring evocation of the poignancy of life and of relationships—from a woman who has lived boldly and with originality.

Reversing Chronic Pain offers a dynamic framework for joining body and mind to speed the healing of traumatic pain from the body level up. Each chapter presents a body-centered skill set that can be mastered through a broad menu of practice exercises. The resulting interlinked somatic building blocks help readers shift from physical pain to body awareness, and from unstoppable suffering to heartfelt connection and peace.
Building on the AIDS cocktail approach that reflects the fact that chronic pain is complex and no one tactic is likely to solve the problem, renowned expert Maggie Phillips presents a 10-1 pain plan comprised of easy strategies based on somatic experience. Even if the reader's pain is perceived as a "10" at the onset of the program, with 10 being intolerable, the somatic building blocks help shift the pain one point at a time until it gradually diminishes to "1" or even "zero." Showing how the common professional interventions-medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback-may be more harmful than healing, Reversing Chronic Pain stresses self-treatment throughout, involving sufferers in attaining lives not simply endured but actively enjoyed.

Common wisdom, encouraged by pharmaceutical companies with a financial interest in the matter, invariably blames cholesterol and saturated fats for everything from heart disease to stroke. Distilling 50 years of research on the subject, and citing studies largely ignored by the mainstream, Fats Are Good for You and Other Secrets offers a provocative challenge to this idea. Author Jon Kabara begins by revealing the surprisingly varied roles played by fats and cholesterol in the body — as a source of all sex hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids, and a necessary factor in digestion and the formation of cell membranes. The author describes the powerful antimicrobial and antiviral effects of fats and cholesterols, and their positive influence on oral health. He examines the relationship of dietary fat to the immune system and the role it plays in cancer, and continues with a detailed look at how plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis) begins and how inflammation and infection, rather than fat and cholesterol, cause its development. Kabara’s sensible, science-based advocacy for an understanding the health benefits of moderate cholesterol and “medium-chain” fats, and the true causes of diseases linked to them, makes this book both important and timely.

The seasons of the year parallel the symbolic seasons of life, with spring representing the childhood years of hope and seeing the world with new eyes; summer the young-adult years of growth and engagement; autumn the years of mid-life reflection, healing, and forgiveness; and winter the late-life years of rest, restoration, and rejuvenation. Daily Aromatherapy introduces readers to the transformative qualities of nature’s aromas for each of these seasons. Each month of the year profiles and explores the psychological and subtle energy aspects of four different essential oils–one per week. Forty-eight different oils are profiled in this way. Readers experience each oil and its powers in depth through seven different intention exercises: an affirmation, emotional self-discovery questions, a ceremony, a blessing, an activity, a visualization, and a prayer.
While aromatherapy is a holistic modality, affecting the body, mind, and spirit, the focus of Daily Aromatherapy is on mind and spirit. While not explicitly including the physical applications of essential oils for treating conditions like colds, flu, or muscle strain, this appealing book shows how physical health is greatly enhanced by the psychological and spiritual well-being that comes from understanding and using these gifts of nature.

Publishers Weekly
If a spiritual memoir is successful, the author weaves together personal experience and theological discourse into a discussion of faith that stretches the reader beyond his or her own understanding of God. Bestselling author and retired Roman Catholic priest Girzone (Joshua) accomplishes this task and more in his narrative nonfiction. As a response to the questions readers of his popular Joshua novels have asked-are the author's beliefs the same as Joshua's?-he compiles a beautifully nuanced expression of his faith as a "help to others who are struggling to develop their own understanding of life." He draws on his studies at seminary and his impressive knowledge of science, history, art and theology to ambitiously tackle a variety of topics, from the existence of God and the creation of the universe to the history of the Catholic Church and some of its traditions, like celibacy and confession. Girzone maintains his humility by placing such challenging discussions in the context of genuine soul-searching. Especially poignant are his confessions of doubt, disbelief, confusion and depression with regard to identifying his core beliefs; he establishes a deep connection with the reader by his utter candidness. In his simple, readable prose, Girzone paints a beautiful portrait of faith. (May 30) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

by Amy Wallace, Hardcover
Amy Wallace - daughter of novelist Irving Wallace - first met Carlos Castaneda and friends when she was a teenager through her father's social circle of celebrities. They met sporadically for many years, but through a fortuitous reconnection with Florinda Donner, one of the "witches" in Carlos' inner circle, she was drawn back to him and into his classes and lectures. Amy and Carlos fell in love, but she slowly learned that she was part of a harem. Yet she remained with the group because she is a spiritual seeker at heart, fascinated by the legend of Don Juan, and stubbornly attached to her lover.
Castaneda's circle of intimates included three very influential "witches," one "magical alien," and a shifting clique of people attracted by the books to pursue Infinity, the ultimate liberation. The cut-throat scramble to be part of the inner circle, the manipulative tactics of Castaneda, and the thrills and crushing disappointments experienced by ambitious followers all point to the inevitable conclusion: Castaneda created a cult and set himself up as guru. Wallace's story spans thirty years, focusing on the last years of Castaneda's life, until his death on June 19, 1998 from liver cancer and diabetes. His admirers sadly realized that this was "not the death of a nagual," who should "burn from within" and disappear into Infinity. Castaneda left his lovers, witches, students, fans, and groupies to grapple with the implosion of their fantasies.
Amy Wallace's true story paints a most disturbing portrait of Carlos Castaneda and his closest associates. Her own profound trauma, disillusionment, and shame caused Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, not uncommon for ex-members of any cult. Thewriting of this book was a part of her healing. Yet Wallace is able to separate the tawdry reality of a cult from the essential genius of Castaneda and the shining gems of wisdom that can be gleaned from his unique writings. Many people have said that real or fake, the books of Castan
The Washington Post
The book is not artful. But it is a compelling page-turner, full of secrets, betrayals and uncharacterizable wackiness. Castaneda assured Wallace that his magic sperm went straight to a woman's brain, where it effected positive change -- and could not impregnate, as his lovers were merely human. He could read newspapers through his toes. With charisma based on such incredible claims, he kept everyone around him in constant anxiety by alternately offering warm approval and assaulting their inherent worth. — David Doherty
